(photo by Paul Wright)Medfield State Hospital was a 900 acres mental hospital consisting of about 58 buildings. Started in 1892, the hospital housed around 2,200 patients and generated its own heat, light and power. The hospital closed in 2003. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. The hospital site has been used as filming location for the Martin Scorcese film Shutter Island and Richard Kelly’s The Box. More pictures can be viewed on the blog of photographer Paul Wright.
